What’s Going on Today

We bet you feel pretty confident about when you might get pulled over by the © po’po’ (which will be never, because you now know how to avoid copyright infringement) and when you can keep on cruisin’ in the public domain and Creative Commons zone. So today, you’re going to put your newly-minted skills to work. Use the Internet to produce a creative masterpiece that’s a mash-up of your own work, an old public domain story, and some public domain and Creative Commons illustrations.

When your instructor asks you to go to the websites below, open them in your browser.

Public Domain Short Stories. Choose a story from the list below.

• “The Raven,” a poem by Edgar Allan Poe
• “The Tell-Tale Heart,” a story by Edgar Allan Poe
• A fairy tale, such as “Beauty and the Beast,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” or “Rumpelstiltzkin”
• “The Gift of the Magi,” a story by O. Henry
• A Beatrix Potter story, such as “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” or “The Tale of Benjamin Bunny“

Websites for Locating Public Domain and Creative Commons Images.

• Wikimedia Commons:
  This site includes images with all sorts of licenses. Permissions are listed below the images, so students can easily see
  whether images are copyrighted (off limits for this activity), public
  domain, or Creative Commons.
• Creative Commons Search: Use this tool to search for CC images on Flickr, Google Images, and many other sites.
